A Christmas Tale
There are three great characters and performances here. The problem is that for some reason we’re given three more subplots which don’t really go anywhere, except take time away from the meat of the story. The film uses a variety of post-modern storytelling effects, which start out fun, but don’t tie in thematically enough or connect to any of the characters in any concrete way, at least enough to justify having them in the film. The scenes between Deneuve and Amalric are some of the best scenes on film this past year, but the rest of the film is a frustrating grab-bag of cliché and indulgence.
