Music Review

Grizzly Bear

This is a nearly perfect album and perhaps its only weakness is that its so airtight, so well calculated that it can come across a bit unintentionally austere. But this is the masterpiece that I knew that Brooklyn-based Grizzly Bear had in them. "Two Weeks" is one of the best songs I've heard so far this year, though most of the of the album is quieter, the songs are just as intricate, and introspective. It sounds like what Grace might have sounded like if Jeff Buckley made it today. A mix of Buckley (both him and his father Tim) orchestration, Pet Sounds era Beach Boys influence along with mid 70's soft rock influences from Fleetwood Mac to David Crosby, all put into a distinctively 2000's indie sounding record (replete with angst in various forms). It's gorgeous, arresting, layered, and demands multiple listens. Highly recommended.

Marry me. This is my new favorite album, especially Two Weeks. What happiness.
